First week in Costa Rica!!!!

Here are some pictures from our first week here in Costa Rica.  Things have been going well and we are excited to see what the Lord has in store for us while we are here.  Isabela is very excited to be attending school and I myself am excited to be in language school.  Today was my first day.  All of my classes are completely in spanish.  The teacher won’t even allow us to talk to each other or ask questions in english.  I am very happy about this because it will challenge me and develop my speaking abilities.  I think I tested into the higher group and so my other four classmates all seem to be at the same level as me.  A level of being able to understand most of what is being said, but fumbling all over the place when trying to speak it ourselves.  So, it is good to be in a group with others who are at the same level.

We went to church on Sunday and it was great.  It was all in spanish.  I was able to understand about 65% of the message.  That was exciting.  That gets me happy thinking that I am on my way to learning spanish…until my bubble bursts shortly after when I can’t understand one single thing that the cab driver says while on our way home.  Oh well, it keeps me humble.

I am excited that there are chapel services two times a week at the institute.  Today was our first.  It is awesome to keep our hearts centered on worshiping God above all else even while being devoted to studying the language.  I will be teaching at the chapel some time in March and also will probably help lead worship a few times.

Maria and I are excited to get involved in some of the local ministries.  We don’t know what we will get involved with, but we know that we will serve the Lord while we are here.  Its just in us.  Our desire is to tell people about Jesus and share His amazing love with the world around us.  So, once we get ourselves a little situated, we will look for opportunities to serve in various ministries.

Amidst the excitement of being here, there is also the pain in our hearts that we continue to have regarding Susana.  I miss that little girl so much.  Today, Isabela found Susana’s old ipod and was playing some songs that she used to play all the time.  It brought back a flood of memories in an instant, and both Maria and I both had to leave the room rather quickly and shed some tears.  The songs were from the Barbie movie “Diamond Castle” that her and Isabela used to watch.  Amazingly, I was listening to the words this morning as Isabela was playing the ipod, and I was blown away by how much the lyrics fit our situation of missing Susana and longing to be with her again, and pressing on in the Lord to be faithful until He also calls us home.  The first song was called “Connected” and it had a chorus that went  like this:

So here I go, takin’ a curve,
But I know that I’m never alone.
I think of you, I know you’d never let me go.
I feel connected, protected, it’s like you’re sitting right with me all the time.
You hear me, you’re near me,
And everything else’s gonna be alright.
‘Cause nothin’ can break this, nothin’ can break this, nothin’ can break this tie.
Connected…connected inside.
It’s not an accident, the time we spent apart.
But now we’re so close, I can always find you right here in my heart.
You’ve given me somethin’ I need, and I don’t ever want it to end.
Because of you, I know I’ve found my strength again.
I feel connected, protected, it’s like you’re sitting right with me all the time.
You hear me, you’re near me,
And everything else’s gonna be alright.
‘Cause nothin’ can break this, nothin’ can break this, nothin’ can break this tie.
Connected…connected inside.

Oh my goodness, my heart was just breaking as I heard this song and it felt like every lyric, which I never really listened intently to until today, was directly related to Susana.  And then Isabela played the other song “We’re gonna find it” and some of the lyrics to that were:

Here we are far from home little bit hungry and a littler alone but it’s alright yes it’s alright ’cause in this room there might be friends can’t see how the story ends but it’s alright yeah it’s alright we can start anew

can’t go back so we gotta go on we’ll stick together staying strong there’s a diamond castle in my mind and someday soon we’re gonna find it (we’re gonna find it) we’re gonna find it (we’re gonna find it) together

Yeah, so I really was blown away as I was listening to these lyrics just before I was leaving for school.  I ended up being rushed because I had to go in my bedroom and cry.  Oh how my heart just aches for my little princess.  But someday, soon, we’re gonna find the real diamond castle in the sky, the dwelling place of God Almighty, and we shall be together worshiping Him in all of His glory for eternity.  Yes, it is the promise of God bound by Him in covenant.  We’re gonna find it…together.

So, Costa Rica has been great so far.  No, we’re not living in a vacation paradise by any means.  We’re living in a city that doesn’t have any special beauty.  We don’t spend our days traveling to the beach or zip lining across the country.  We spend our days gathered together with other brothers and sisters who are also sold out for the gospel and are burdened to reach the nations of the world, and we worship together, study and learn together, pray together, and serve the Lord here in the city together.  I do hope however that we will have an occasion from time to time to do some zip lining or travel to the coast.  But seriously, what is most important to every one of us here is the ability to learn the spanish language so that we can testify of His goodness, mercy, and love all throughout the spanish speaking countries of the world.

Anyway, here are some pictures of our first week here in Costa Rica.  Please continue to pray for us.  Thanks so much to all of you who have been faithfully praying for our family.  May the Lord be glorified in our lives.  May our hearts be fully surrendered to Him.  Gloria a Dios!

“The Lord has promised good to me
His word my hope secures PRAISE GOD!!
He will my shield and portion be
    As long as life endures…….”

“Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)” (Chris Tomlin)

    Amazing grace
    How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I’m found
Was blind, but now I see
‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
    And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
    The hour I first believed
    My chains are gone
    I’ve been set free
My God, my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood His mercy rains
    Unending love, Amazing grace

The Lord has promised good to me
    His word my hope secures
He will my shield and portion be
    As long as life endures

    [2x]
    My chains are gone
    I’ve been set free
My God, my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood His mercy rains
    Unending love, Amazing grace

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow
    The sun forbear to shine
But God, Who called me here below
    Will be forever mine
    Will be forever mine
    You are FOREVER mine!!!!

Take All Of Me (Lisbon, Portugal+Paris, France) Lyrics
    Hillsong United

“You broke the night like the sun
And healed my heart with Your great love
    Any trouble I couldn’t bear
You lifted me upon Your shoulders

    Love that’s stronger
    Love that covers sin
And takes the weight of the world

    I love You
All of my hope is in You
    Jesus Christ take my life
    Take all of me

You stand on mountain tops with me
With You I walk through the valleys
You gave Your only Son for me
Your grace is all I rely on

I love You so, and I give up my heart to say
I need You so, my everything….”

    Love in Christ,

    Rebecca
