We need you to pray, so stop your on-line Christmas shopping for the moment and join us in prayer:)
We found out yesterday that our insurance has denied Susana’s Proton Therapy Treatment in Jacksonville, FL. They do not think that it is considered a medical necessity. So, unless they change their minds after talking to Susana’s doctors, then she will just end up getting regular radiation therapy here in Asheville.
Both Proton Therapy and Radiation Therapy are designed to accomplish the same task, which is to kill of any remaining cancer cells in the body, but the difference is that Proton Therapy is more protective of the vital organs not suffering damage in the process of treatment, whereas Radiation Therapy has more of a risk of organ damage.
The main site where Susana’s tumor WAS (that feels good to say that) was on the adrenal gland which is extremely close to her kidney. So, either our insurance does not think that the kidney is a vital organ or they simply have been drinking to much special egg nog before the holidays, I don’t know. It was even strange/difficult to talk to the administrator at Jacksonville yesterday who told us the news. She was stating one somewhat positive side to it, which is the fact that, should the worst happen and Susana’s kidney suffers damage in the future, she still has another kidney and so it would not be life threatening such as if the radiation was near the liver or heart and caused damage. So, as much as that is true, we still would love it if our daughter did not have to be subjected to such possible side effects.
Therefore, please pray with us that the best and safest treatment will be given to Susana. Pray that the Lord will open the door that needs to be opened. We know that He is in complete control. If we are supposed to go to Jacksonville for Proton Treatment, then please pray that the insurance company will change their mind after talking with the doctors this afternoon. And if we are supposed to get traditional Radiation Treatment, then pray that she will not suffer and ill side effects.
We will have a decision made by Monday because Susana cannot wait any longer than that before she begins treatment at either place. So, Amazon.com can wait for a few minutes while you pause and lift up this need to our Heavenly Father. Thank you all so much. We love you. – Cody
By the way, Susana is doing FANTASTIC!!! She is so happy to be home. She is eating like crazy all throughout the day. Her counts are great. The doctors said that she looks great. She is extremely lively and full of joy. She has been doing homeschooling every day and is really enjoying getting back to it. We went out and bought a Christmas Tree (fake) and decorations the other night and spent the night decorating the tree, singing silly Christmas songs, drinking hot chocolate, and watching a Christmas movie and eating popcorn. We had so much fun together. Today, after homeschooling and work, we are going to visit our dog Casey, who has been staying with friends of ours for the last few months while we have been away. Susana is so excited, as is the rest of us. We really miss her.
At any rate, we want to protect our daughter as much as possible. So, in our completely inexperienced opinion, Proton Therapy is the way to go. But, ultimately God is in control. Perhaps He sees something that we do not see.
