Would you bet on 50/50 odds?

Would you travel to the moon if there was a 50/50 chance that you could die in the process?

Would you jump off a bridge for a million dollars if there was a 50/50 chance you would survive?  What about for a billion dollars?

Would you bet your life savings on a horse that  had a 50/50 chance of winning?

Would you go through a grueling and painful year and a half of cancer treatment that includes many possible horrific side effects with only a 50/50 chance of survival?

I’m sure the answers to the above questions are simple to answer:  No, No, No, and a most resounding YES!!!  Well, that is where we are today and unfortunately our question does not begin with a word suggesting choice such as “Would”, but rather more definitive such as “Will”.  We don’t have the option.  The question is one that we must face.  Will we go through such painful and grueling treatment with our 4 year old daughter Susana battling Neuroblastoma cancer with a 50/50 chance of survival?  Because those are the odds that are given.   That reality has hit us like a blow to the stomach these past few days as we have been told that, statistically, half of the children with the same condition that little Susana has will die within 5 years.  And of course, half will survive.  Operating only in statistics and a natural realm, we are facing a monster of a disease that claims the life of every other child in its wake.  We are undone if we read all of the reports, statistics, endless lists of major side effects from treatment, etc.  In the natural realm, the 50/50 odds given to us are not reassuring by any means whatsoever.  I wouldn’t bet a nickel on 50/50 odds.

O how helpless and hopeless we would be if we had nothing else, but those odds.  But O how hopeful we are knowing that we are held in the hands of a great and loving God who owns both 50’s, a God who is in full control, a God who laughs at the word “chance” knowing that it is a word that has never been spoken from the heavens.  No, our God is BIG.  Our God is LOVE.  Our God is POWER.  Our God is ABLE.  And our God is SOVEREIGN.  Yes, I take great delight in knowing that cancer must bow to his holy word if indeed that is part of His plan that will bring Him great glory.  I am no different than the roman centurion that asked Jesus to just speak the word so that his son, who was at home dying, would be healed.  My God just has to speak the word and it shall be done.  He is the one who holds the keys to life and death.

I am NOT of the school that states that this cancer is the work of satan and therefore we must battle satan and fight with him to conquer Susana back from the death grip that he has on her.  No way!!!  There is only one who has a grip on her…and that is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords…and His grip upon her is even stronger than death.  I rest in His word that states “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?  Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father.  And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.  So don’t be afraid;  you are worth more than many sparrows.” (Mat:10:29-31)

And so we cling to the Lord and ask that He would once again display His glory by defying the odds that men establish.  The odds were stacked against the Israelites being chased by the egyptian army after they had left Egypt, yet the Lord showed His glory and parted the red sea.  The odds were stacked against the Israelite army that was under attack from the Midianites, yet God displayed His glory by having Gideon send thousands of troops home, leaving but a few hundred so that all would know that it was by the hand of the Lord that the Israelites prevailed.  The odds were stacked against the Israelites when they were under oppression from the philistines, particularly from a giant named Goliath, yet God displayed His glory by calling a ruddy shepherd boy to go up against the uncircumcised disgrace with just a sling and a stone who killed the giant and routed the philistines.  The specific reference in the story states that Goliath set out to “defy” the chosen people of God.  Yet we see that nothing at all can defy the will of God.  God certainly will not be defied by odds that are set by man.

And so join with us in fervent prayer that the Lord God will once again show forth His glory.  Join with us in prayer that the King of All will once again show that nothing can defy Him.  He is not at all limited by the odds.  There are no odds in His Kingdom.  What He says goes. Period.  And join with us in prayer that we will cling to this truth every single second of every single day because the truth is that we can forget, especially for those few minutes when we are dealt with a blow to the gut stating that our daughter, statistically, only has a 50/50 chance of surviving cancer.  And so fight with us in prayer that we will not get sucked into the natural where the words “chance” and “odds” are on every piece of information that is given to us.  Fight with us in prayer that we will linger on the words “Sovereign” and “Good” and “Loving”, and in those words will we daily find our hope. – Cody

  1. Although you don’t know us, we follow your lives and pray with you. We ask God to hold Susanna up in his hands and heal her. Your family leads such a life of giving and of sharing love, and God’s words. He has nothing else but healing strength to share with your family. I have 2 children of my own so I know the 50/50 odds shared with you mean nothing but a number. With all the people out there who love your family, the prayers alone will be enough to wrap sweet Susanna up for a lifetime. God is good.

  2. who has believed the true report????
there are thousands of doctors and others who will quote statistics.
like the spies who slipped into the land and came back spreading stories of fear.
“they are as giants and we are as grasshoppers before them”.
but joshua and caleb came back and said “let’s go! let’s rock n roll” (granted, that’s in modern vernacular!). 😀 the battle is the Lord’s, and HE HAS ALREADY WON THE VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cody and maria…this is a good word.
and it is something we can all take away with us to face the struggles we ALL have in our lives.

we stand in prayer with you both, for you both, for isabela and for susana.

“Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” Psalm 27:14

  4. The battle is the Lord’s and satan would like nothing better than to give us so much fear that we forget who is in control.
I, also, have been following your blog although you do not know me. We do have friends in common, as my friends are missionairies in Jacmel. You met my teenage daughter when she spent 5 months in Haiti in the beginning of this year and we are both praying for your family.
(Say Hi to Cesar when you see him in NJ!!)
God Bless you and all your family…rely totally on His strength, He promises it for you and He ALWAYS keeps His promises!

  5. Rebecca,

Thanks so much for your encouragement and prayers. Thank you also for the card/note that your daughter sent Susana. Lord willing, we will get over to Greer sometime and visit with you and your family.

  6. I do the prayer list for our Sunday School class (Greg Weigel’s) at Ogletown.
Susana has been and continues to be our that list. We have a great group of prayer warriors so rest assured Susana and your whole family is being lifted to the Lord every day. We know God hasn’t run out of what we here on earth call miracles so we keep praying one will be delivered to your precious child. God bless.
