Back in the Hospital…

I suppose this is something that we need to get used to.  Susana’s blood counts dropped to the very bottom, which is what we were anticipating as a result of the chemo.  But then this evening she spiked a fever of 102, therefore we called the doctor and they told us that we needed to bring her back to the ER.  So, here I am (Cody) sitting in the ER with my little girl who is about to be admitted to the ICU because she needs a lot of blood.  Her white blood count is at zero.  Again, the doctors told us to expect this since the chemo not only destroys the tumors, but also destroys the good cells too.  So, because she got a fever and has no white blood cells to fight off the fever, it was necessary to get her back to the hospital.

She will have several blood transfusions tonight.  I pray that she just sleeps through it all as she is doing right now.  The doctor told me that she will probably be here for the week since they will need to monitor her and see if her counts come back up.

From what I have heard from other parents that are in this same battle, these things are just par for the course.  We just have to get used to the fact that we may be in and out of the hospital all throughout her treatment.

I am so proud of my little girl.  She is so strong and so brave.  She is so beautiful and sweet.  May the Lord be holding her close now even as she sleeps.

So…prayer warriors…let’s go to work!

  1. Cody,
I worked at st jude children’s research hospital for seven years and am still amazed at how strong and courageous the little ones are. My family prays for each of u daily, may God continue to glorify himself through u, mariah, and susana.

  2. cody and maria. we are praying for susanna. the good news (if it can be called that), is that this is NOT UNEXPECTED, and she is being cared for by some of the top medical staff in the world. and susanna and both of you and isabella are receiving prayer covering from around the globe.
i can’t imagine what you two must be going thru. the one time we had to bring rhi in for tests and they did some blood work a few times, she was crying and so afraid, and it literally shreded my heart to hear her and be holding her so they could do it…
the Lord’s hand is upon the two of you also, giving you the strength for both your girls and one another, and also keeping your faith strong. others around you at the hospital, (the medical staff, families of other patients) certainly are witnessing the Lord’s grace as you hold onto His Word.
we are praying for you my dearest friends.
    in Jesus Name!

  3. We are on it Cody. God bless Susanita! We have been praying this for her:
For you created Susana’s inmost being;you knit her together in her mother’s womb. She praises you because she is fearfully and wonderfully made;your works are wonderful, she knows that full well. Her frame was not hidden from you when she was made in the secret place. When she was woven together in the deths of the earth, your eyes saw her formed body. All the days ordained for her were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to her are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were she to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. Whe she awakes, she is still with you. SHE IS STILL WITH GOD! GOD IS THERE! Lord please You know her better than any of us. Please heal her! God bless you all. Hope you found a good place to live nearby. We are with you.

  4. cody and maria,
We are praying for susana..just to say all things are possible in Jesus Christ..and He said in exodus 15:26b” I am the Lord that healeth thee” and in Jeremiah 30:17a ” I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord.”
May God be with you day after day!

  6. Lord…hold your daughter near…heal your little girl and restore her! Father, we know that we can boldly approach Your throne of grace with confidence – and in confidence, we ask that You would give sweet Susana the strength and peace and determination to get through these hard days. We pray that she would see Your face every step of this difficult road. And Lord…give Cody and Maria and Isabela Your COMFORT, Your PEACE, Your HOPE!

  7. Praying for you guys continually. We had many trips to the hospital in between chemo treatments so as abnormal as things may seem right now it really is very common. I am sending you guys an awesome book and healing scripture CD in the mail today. I hope it will encourage and uplift your spirits. The Lord IS with you and is watching over your precious little girl. Know that Jesus is ever interceding for you as well as thousands around the world!!

Isaiah 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee because he trusteth in thee.

  8. Right now this familiar but all-too-often glazed over verse comes to mind,
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

    Praying for you guys.

  10. Cody and Maria,

You are in the first stages of what seems so unfamiliar right now. Believe it or not….it will become very familiar. This is not unexpected but does not make it any easier when you are walking your young child through this.

Just remember…every time you are there you have the opportunity to pray for suffering families you see all around you. That really helped me when I was scared or sad to focus on the others. While waiting in the ER..or on hospital floors….waiting on doctors…pray for the families you see and it will change your perspective. This is the most fertile mission ground you will ever walk on in your life.

We will cover Susana and your family in prayer so you can cover the families only you are seeing! As a family still going through this ( a year and a half into it) we know just how to pray for you.
Thank you for glorifying our Great God and Savior through your suffering. There is no greater glory than that!

A quote that helped me in the early days:

“When God permits His children to go through the furnace,
He keeps His eye on the clock and His hand on the thermostat.
His loving heart knows how much and how long.”

    -Warren Wiersbe (1Peter 1:6-7)

  11. she is in my prayers – i am a 6 year leukemia survivor and have been through this and i cannot imagine a child having to endure all of this – but it will be worth it

  12. Hello precious family. I came over from Trent Floyd’s CaringBridge site and will be praying for Susana – and for you!! I’ll put this blog link on our prayer site as well.

    “The LORD bless you
    and keep you;

the LORD make his face shine upon you
    and be gracious to you;

the LORD turn his face toward you
    and give you peace.”

    Numbers 6:24-26

    1 Praise the LORD, O my soul;
all my inmost being, praise his holy name.

2 Praise the LORD, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits-

3 who forgives all your sins
    and heals all your diseases,

4 who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,

5 who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

    Psalm 103:1-5

Praying Susana’s counts recover quickly – that her bones produce perfect marrow – that the marrow produces pure blood that wards off all sickness and disease. No harmful or lasting side effects in Jesus’ name!

And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

    Mark 16:17-18

Don’t think for an instant that cancer is God’s will for your daughter – it’s not! Your fight is FROM VICTORY in JESUS!

The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).

    John 10:10 AMP

Praying you are smiling by now!! All of God’s promises are yes and amen for you and your precious Susana. : )
