Last year, when we went to Haiti, a team member from Delaware was faced with the reality of sex slavery and child prostitution. A Haitian herself, her heart broke with sadness when she saw what little girls as young as 6 years old were forced to do in order to survive. The pain in her heart, created by the images she saw and the things she encountered, moved her to take action. She started a ministry named SHAMA in Seaford, Delaware to raise awareness and rescue little girls in Haiti from this cruel and gruesome lifestyle.
These are some of the things that we will encounter in Haiti. We firmly believe that God is calling our family to minister, protect, care for, and love the Haitian children. In Haiti the category of children at risk is too broad. It includes the orphans, the restaveks, the sex slaves, those abandoned and neglected by their parents and society, homeless children, and even teens that are reaching the age 18 that have no hope for a better future.
The issues are too many to number or even begin to tackle, but God is mighty. And He can use any one of us who is willing to do their part one little bit at a time.
Check out this video. These numbers are sickening. It hurts my heart to know that this is happening, not only in Haiti, but all over the world.—Maria
